Just two years ago, a simple plate of chicken rice was an affordable treat. Today, it feels like a little luxury. Hawker food prices have shot up — by 6.1% in just 2023 alone. Some favourites, like chicken rice and seafood noodles, now cost over 12% more than they did two years back.

In December 2022, hawker food inflation reached a startling 8.1%. That’s the highest we’ve seen in 14 years. Where meals once started at $2.50, you now need at least $3.50 for a basic dish.

Remember the $50 hawker challenge? To eat for five days at that budget, you’d now need closer to $120–$150. What was once possible for many is now out of reach for some.

But there’s hope. We can still savour these meals and support our hawkers by choosing wisely, sharing plates, or even trying new stalls with better value. Let’s not lose the joy of gathering over good food.

It’s time to rethink how we enjoy our hawker centres — so everyone can keep tasting Singapore’s rich flavours, no matter the changes.
